CORRESPONDENCE CLASS COURSE (The Fourteen Lessons)
in YOGI PHILOSOPHY and ORIENTAL OCCULTISM
The Fifth Lesson” Thought Dynamics—The nature, quality and power of Thought—Thought Forms—Thought Influences—The Occult Teachings on this great subject.
Originally written for publication in 1903 but released in January 1904 as a monthly correspondence course, I believe these lessons contain invaluable and essential ancient wisdom. (It’s important to remember that many words are of the period ~ “Occult,” “Occultism,” “Ego” etc… mean very different things to society today. )
In 2003, I stumbled across an original of the book that was written after this one, published in 1905 called “Advance Course in Yogi Philosophy” ~ by Yogi Ramacharaka. I managed to find it in West Hollywood, California at “The Bodhi Tree,” a massive and mystical but sadly now defunct, eclectic spiritual bookstore. I had no idea what the title meant, but that book seemed to literally “jump” off the shelf and into my hands. After thumbing through it a bit, I had to take it home.
It sat unread for several years but during my international move from America to the U.K. in 2009, I felt somehow that it should make the final cut of just the most precious things to come with me to my new home in the English countryside. So in it went, with just a few other belongings. It was a difficult choice having to condense my entire life into just 6 small boxes for shipping.
“Advanced Course” made its way from California to our Totnes home library bookshelf ~ and in 2011 I finally began to read it. <gasp> It was ABSOLUTELY incredible! Its words and teachings made so much sense, paragraph after paragraph they resonated ~ joy and truth. I then began to study it diligently and daily.
Many days I walked miles along the river, alongside lush country meadows and farmland fields and I would read this book over and over and OVER again on my Kindle. I would then go home and delve in deeper and blog on it some more. It seemed almost unreal how the teachings seemed to morph and change. If I revisited the same writings at later dates, FURTHER teachings could be understood and the words revealed deeper and different meanings the more I read and researched it. I have spent cherished time with “Advanced Course in Yogi Philosophy” every week for since the spring of 2011.
I then did some investigating on these powerful teachings. I had many questions. Who was the writer? Where did they come from? HOW COME NO ONE IS STUDYING/APPLYING THESE teachings on a global level? At first, the Yogi Publication Society was a bit mysterious. I did find a few leads here, and discovered others interested in these works. That’s where I found Roger. Roger Cole has lovingly transcribed many of these books and made them available in e-book form, his company is YogeBooks.
Apparently it was not time for these teachings to reach the masses when they were first published back in the early 20th century. These works are non-denominational, have no religious exclusivity and they do not condemn ANY religion. They teach of the Source, the Absolute, they teach of love, unity, compassion, forgiveness, kindness, gratitude, escape from suffering ~ all of it.
I discovered that author William Walker Atkinson wrote the books (along with several other titles) under the pseudonym “Yogi Ramacharaka” ~ Inspired by Mabel Collins’ powerful and near magically compelling book from 1885 “Light on the Path”. In my heart of hearts, I believe these were channeled works. Channeled meaning however you have come to understand it.
I went on to delve further into the wisdom of Collins’ “Light on the Path” and last year, I found the original “Correspondence Course in Yogi Philosophy and Oriental Occultism” (Fourteen Lessons). This one preceded the “Advance Course” <~ The original one that had captivated and touched me so deeply. It is this first book that I believe we should begin with, that’s why the audio of “The First Lesson” was published January 31st, 2014, one hundred and ten years from the beginning of the original mail-correspondence course.
Inspired by Collins’ and Atkinson’s Theosophical links, I have also begun to study Theosophical teachings and the works of Helena Blavatsky (who I cannot believe I hadn’t heard of until my 47th year on this planet!) and many other authors of similar (but surprisingly obscure teachings,) many of them Theosophists.
I have always felt that there should be a study group of some sort based around these books. “Light on the Path,” the “Correspondence Course in Yogi Philosophy and Oriental Occultism” and “Advanced Course in Yogi Philosophy”. There are other books that are worthy as well: “Deity, Cosmos and Man” ~ Geoffrey Farthing, The Fire and Light of Theosophical Literature” ~ Carlos Cardoso Aveline, “THE KYBALION,” “Hatha Yoga,” “Science of Breath” etc…
There is so much more to say and I could go on and on, but that’s where you come in. I invite you to study and discover along with me these precious teachings. Grab a copy of the book online or listen as I read the lessons aloud. These writings literally changed my life in indescribably wonderful ways when I applied their Ancient Wisdoms. I still do!
Feel free to comment and contact me. Please remember that I am no expert, just simply sharing my experience. I have much to learn as I go along.
